Robbie Jones is the 3 year old son of a member of Gala staff, Jill Graham, and her fiancé Wayne Jones. Just 4 weeks before the planned date of Jill and Wayne’s wedding Robbie became seriously ill with Meningococcal Meningitis.
On Sunday July 6th Robbie was feeling generally unwell, so Jill and Wayne put Robbie to bed with them so that they could keep an eye on him. Just a couple of hours after putting him to bed, Wayne woke up to find Robbie covered in black and blue bruise like marks. He immediately rang for an ambulance, and doctors at University Hospital of North Durham realised it was meningitis and transferred Robbie to Newcastle General Hospital where specialist doctors could help him. Robbie was in a critical condition at Newcastle General for approximately a week and the doctors were unsure if he would survive.

Septicaemia was all over his body, but doctors were hopeful that they wouldn’t have to amputate. However Robbie’s condition took a turn for the worst on Tuesday July 22nd and doctors made the decision to move him to Newcastle RVI immediately and amputate both his legs to save his life, as the septicaemia was spreading. Robbie’s left leg was taken from below the knee and his right leg was taken from above the knee. Surgeons also had to remove the ends of his fingers on his left hand.
